Fibromyalgia: the disease that hurts.

que es la fibromialgia?

According to the Fibromyalgia Association (AFIBROM), this condition affects 2.45% of the world’s population and more than 90% are women, between 30 and 55 years of age.

Clinical diagnosis.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disease, characterized mainly by constant and generalized pain, mainly in tendons and joints, and localized in the cervical and lumbar region, in the hip, elbow and knee joints and also in the chest.

In addition, fibromyalgia can produce other symptoms, mainly chronic fatigue, sleep, memory and mood problems. In any case, the clinical manifestations may vary according to the patient.
Until 1992 the disease was recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), previously it was believed to be a psychiatric condition, due to the difficulty in identifying the origin of the discomfort it presents.

Origin and diagnosis.

The cause of this disease is unknown, but there are triggers, such as depression, anxiety, stress, or some other disease.
One of the main challenges in fibromyalgia is the diagnosis. Although there is currently no test to confirm the disease, diagnostic test protocols are used to rule out other disorders and/or diseases.

At this stage it is important that the doctor performs a complete physical examination, and when touching the critical points of pain is triggered.
The important thing is to give an accurate diagnosis soon to treat the patient as soon as possible because if the pain is not treated, it becomes disabling for the person in their daily life.
